Sensory Stations / Movement Breaks

Updated: Mar 10, 2024

When I started my new job I inherited this amazing sensory pathway decal set. Don't get me wrong I was extremely grateful because these decal packages can be expensive. In the midst of getting adjusted to a new job these decals went to the bottom of my priority list but stayed looming via emails from my assistant principal asking for timeline expectations (eek!). Finally ready to take the project on, I discovered one small (huge) problem. My school essentially has all carpet flooring... thats when my OT strength for creativity came into play and the vision for a sensory wall came to life!

Pros:

-well received by staff

-used frequently by students

Cons:

-does not last as long compared for floor placement

Sharing my OT insight about the important of movement opportunities for students in our school newsletter created buzz and staff buy in...

"This year our school is implementing sensory/motor pathways around the school for all students to utilize during the school day. Providing students with movement opportunities throughout the day has a positive impact on learning. Getting your body moving helps to maximize sensory input to address: postural control and balance, motor planning, whole body movement skills, and visual spatial skills. Additionally, using sensory/motor pathways have cognitive and learning benefits such as addressing regulation of attention/concentration/behavior through the school day, visual sequencing skills, and working memory skills. The newest addition, the sensory wall, is one of three total pathways. The wall is geared towards our younger students, but all are welcome to use it!"
