Creating a low demand environment

Updated: Mar 13, 2024

After working with students for many years I have come to recognize the power of creating a low demand environment. This is especially useful when working with an individual that has a high need for autonomy. This approach is based on trust, flexibility, collaboration, careful use of language, and a balanced approach to demands. The goal is to create an environment that minimizes stress and anxiety- ultimately keeping a child from experiencing a fight or flight reaction. Things to consider:

  1. language choice: use declarative language (first person comments that emphasize observation, collaboration, or uncertainty) ex: line up for art -> I notice everyone is lined up at the door ready to go to art.

  2. tone of voice

  3. outsource demands: notes written on a post it, rolling a dice to decide

  4. prioritize sensory regulation

  5. use humor
